How to set out a table tennis playing space

  1. Clear the space. Keep at least 14 m × 7 m free, with 5 m of clear height above the floor, lights included.
  2. Find the centre. Snap a chalk line down the middle of the long side and one across the middle. The net sits over the cross line.
  3. Place the table. Centre it on both lines: 5.63 m of floor behind each end and 2.737 m beside each side.
  4. Set the surrounds. Enclose the space with surrounds about 0.75 m high, all of one dark colour. Each corner may be closed by a surround up to 1.50 m long.
  5. Check the floor. No floor lines are needed. The floor must not be light-coloured, shiny or slippery, and not brick, tile, concrete or stone; wood or a roll-out sports vinyl is right.
